RSRS JAMMU

Jammu is the second largest city of the J&K state, situated at a latitude of 32°43'N, a longitude of 74° 54'E on Shivalik ranges, at an altitude of 250 m (from MSL). The annual rainfall is 1056 mm which is mostly spread over July, August and December months. The average maximum and minimum temperature of 31.92°C and 19.33°C are recorded respectively in the region with hottest months as May-June (46°C) and coolest December-January (3°C). Despite relatively narrow geographical spread, the Jammu division of J&K state exhibits remarkable diversity in climate and is gifted with favorable climate congenial for production of bivoltine silk. Jammu division comprises typically of three types of climates viz Sub-tropical (Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur area and plains of Rajouri). Intermediate (mid-high altitude of district Kathua, Udhampur, Rajouri and Poonch) and temperate (high reaches of district Poonch and Doda) spread in the six districts in Jammu division of the state.Following an overwhelming response to demonopolization of sericulture in J&K State, the industry picked up momentum and need for systematic research support was felt, which hitherto lacked in Jammu region particularly Thus looking into requirements of R&D support for the upliftment of sericulture industry in the sub-tropical region of the J&K state and also for the similar agro climatic areas of the adjoining states, the Central Silk Board, while implementing the ambitious National Sericulture Project established a Regional Sericultural Research Station at Miransahib in Jammu under overall technical and administrative control of CSR & Tl, Pampore. The station formally started functioning from July, 1994. The Regional Sericultural Research Station is located in 35 acre campus made available by Govt of J&K through Directorate of Sericulture This station comprises of a research farm and buildings namely

(a) An administrative building and laboratories
(b) Six rearing buildings
(c) one grain age building
(d) one cold storage building besides other buildings and a residential complex.

   The station functions with a strong support of scientific personnel pecialized in different fields of sericulture.    The station is assisted by an Administrative section in dealing with financial and establishment matters, and a Technical Cell for dealing all the technical nature of correspondence and compilation of periodical reports etc. and also having four sections are as follows

a) Moriculture Section.
b) Sericulture Section.
c) Technical Cell.
d) Administration Section

Station has a well established library to support scientific personnel and having attached extension unit’s viz., REC, Barnoti, REC, Sujanpur, REC, Nowshera and Sub-REC, Tikri, through which the station is extending the required R&D support in its area of operation.
